When is your wash day, and what is your natural hair care regime? My wash days are typically during my self-care Sunday. My Self-care Sundays consists of treating myself to a nice face mask followed by my skincare routine, and giving some much needed tender loving care and attention to my natural hair.
On wash days I chose to do a pre-poo treatment before shampooing my hair. If you’re a natural hair newbie, you may be wondering what is a pre-poo, and how do I do it? Don’t worry, I gotcha!
A pre-poo treatment is the process of applying oils and other moisturizing products to your hair before shampooing the hair. There are several pre-poo treatments that can be purchased at your local hair and beauty supply store, or you can create a diy (do-it-yourself) pre-poo treatment with products you already have at home. For my pre-poo I used coconut & olive oil combined with conditioner. Don’t limit yourself when combining pre-poo ingredients. There’s so many different ingredients that can be used to create your own pre-poo treatment like honey, yogurt, banana and so much more.
Pre-pooing your hair before shampooing does wonders for your natural hair, including added, extra moisture, makes detangling the hair easier, and helps your conditioner work and do what it’s supposed to do for your hair.
How to Pre-Poo, Wash and Style Natural Hair on Wash Day :
1. Detangle and pre-poo the hair using your preferred pre-poo treatment.
2. Shampoo & condition the hair as usual. Apply a deep treatment to the hair, cover with a shower cap and let it sit on the hair for 15 minutes while using low heat.
3. Rinse out deep treatment, apply a leave in conditioner to help add and retain moisture.
4. Apply curl defining cream for definition, & oil to seal and lock in moisture.
5. Style and allow the hair to fully dry to prevent frizz.
